CAUSES OF HAIR LOSS

What is hair loss?

We can refer to hair loss – alopecia, in medical terms – when the loss of hair is more than 25% in total. In figures, a loss of more than 125-150 hairs per day is considered abnormal. At that point, consulting a specialist is recommended.

Hair loss: a medical and social problem

For many, hair loss is not only a medical problem, but is also perceived as a social problem, with a serious psychological impact on those suffering from it.

Hair is one of the parts of the body which is most cared for and valued by both men and women. As a result, for many, hair loss is seen as the first step towards premature old age. Baldness can affect self-esteem.

As far as women are concerned, although it is true that hair loss rarely becomes as severe as in men, when they are affected by such a condition, they perceive it with extreme concern.

Why is my hair falling out?

There are several factors that can cause hair loss. In many cases of hair loss, there is usually a hormonal component (androgenetic alopecia) and is inherited from both the father and the mother. A man with a bald father and maternal grandfather is highly likely to go bald before he turns 30. However, there are other factors such as stress, medical treatments, bad eating habits or hormonal changes such as the time after childbirth, among others, which can also cause hair loss.

In many cases, hair loss is caused by a local increase in dehydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that causes the hair growth phase to shorten. After the hair has fallen out, it is gradually replaced by thinner and thinner hair, which has a shorter half-life and falls out before it has matured, so it will be replaced again.

Androgenetic alopecia is more common in men than in women and is more difficult to combat than other types of hair loss such as those caused by stress or poor eating habits. When androgenetic alopecia occurs, it usually begins at the front or the top of the scalp, which, as hair continues to fall out, produces the classic receding hairline.
