CAUSES OF DANDRUFF

What is dandruff?

Dandruff is a scalp condition producing excessive flaking of skin cells. Such excess flaking usually involves redness or itchiness. There are several factors that influence the appearance of dandruff.

Contrary to what many people may think, dandruff is not caused by poor hygiene but, among other causes, is believed to be caused by a fungus called Malassezia furfur that naturally inhabits everyone’s scalp.

Why does dandruff appear?

The appearance of dandruff is the result of an increase in the rate of flaking of the epidermis, where the cells of the basal layer (deepest layer) need half the time or less than a normal scalp to reach the stratum corneum (top layer). This rapid proliferation causes an increase in the number of cells in the stratum corneum, accompanied by an abnormal cohesion that causes the appearance and release of large clusters of such cells that is nothing other than what we know as dandruff.

But what causes the increased rate of flaking of the epidermis? Currently, one of the most widespread theories attributes this process to a fungus called Malassezia furfur.

Below is an explanation of the process by which Malassazia furfur accelerates the rate of flaking of the epidermis, producing dandruff:

1) Malassezia furfur (a fungus found on the scalp) degrades free fatty acids in the scalp.

2) 2) Approximately 50% of the population is susceptible to degraded fatty acids, which can cause irritation, dryness, itching and redness of the scalp.

3) 3) As a reaction to the irritation, the development of basal layer cells is accelerated.

4) 4) The increased rate of flaking of the epidermis causes excessive accumulation of skin cells that are the main cause of dandruff.

In the condition of dandruff, the presence of Malassazia furfur increases, reaching up to 75% of the total flora on the scalp, aggravating the dandruff problem.

For this reason, the best way to fight dandruff is to directly attack the main cause of dandruff with an adequate treatment such as Pilexil Antidandruff.

However, it is important not to forget that, in addition to this fungus, there are other factors that contribute to the appearance of dandruff.

Dandruff: an aesthetic and social problem

Dandruff is not only an aesthetic problem, it can also often be a social problem that causes embarrassment or discomfort. Who hasn’t glanced down at the dandruff on someone’s shoulder? Who hasn’t tried to brush dandruff off a shoulder so that others won’t notice it? Who hasn’t stopped wearing black to hide the fact that they have dandruff?

Beautiful, healthy hair is the best first impression you can make, but approximately 50% of the population will have dandruff at some point in their lives. Fortunately, dandruff is a problem that can easily be kept under control with proper treatment.
